from soil to tea to teahouse to soul

final thesis 01.11.2026

Presentation: 01.11.2026 at c*space from 15:00-18:00 / Langhansstr.86 / Berlin-Weissensee

This project adopts a circular and locally grounded approach that spans the entire value chain – from material sourcing (clay, wood) and production (tea) to the structure’s use (tea house) and its ritual, contemplative function (tea ceremony, meditation, slowing down).

By predominantly using locally available materials – specifically clay from on-site excavation (from the lake) and wood – transport distances and associated CO2 emissions are significantly reduced.

In terms of both concept and design, the project is rooted in the long architectural tradition of Japanese teahouses and the philosophy underpinning them: the aesthetics of emptiness (*ma*) and the hidden (*oku*); the principle of dynamic movement sequences (Nô theater); the Buddhist-influenced concept of impermanence and renewal; the *wabi* aesthetic of imperfection (beauty found in the unfinished); and the I Ching’s theory of the five elements ( water, fire, wood, earth and metal ) . These cultural and philosophical references – alongside the principle of permeable boundaries and the deliberate staging of light – form a central conceptual foundation for the design, linking material and structural circularity with a holistic spatial and atmospheric experience.
